Good taste reflected itself in the design and decoration of churches. Such refinement had been a staple of the Episcopal churches since the 1840s, and the new Catholic churches frequently dazzled curious visitors with their ribbed vaults, exotic stone, iconography, murals, stained glass, elaborate altars and reredos. Increasingly, Presbyterian, Baptist and Methodist leaders became aware of their plain meetinghouses-many were essentially schoolhouses and barn-like structures fitted out with decorative entries, windows and steeples to provide a ceremonial look-and the contrast between them and the more elaborate Catholic and Episcopal churches was obvious. Over the next three decades more than a score of other churches in the county would come to that same conclusion. With the exception of New Brunswick and Perth Amboy, however, the Middlesex churchscape is one crafted by carpenters and builders, not architects. Competition for members in a vibrant pluralistic culture also fed the struggle for elegance and community superiority.All the extant 18th and 19th century churches in Middlesex county are illustrated and discussed in this thoroughly-researched work. All the important architectural styles of American religious architecture are present in Middlesex, although usually in provincial and attenuated form.
